Thursday, July 22, 2004 Sorry it took so long to finally get around to my second day, it took awhile because I've been busy. First my 19th birthday came around and I celebrated it with family and friends, then at the ned of the day I got the best present ever. Ashley came home after 22 days of neither of us seeing each other, so we had some catching up to do. Okay, enough of the mushiness, here's my post:
This morning I woke up feeling a little rested and really hungry because I hadn't eaten much the night before. Breakfast was mashed potatoes and beef I think, it was good and normal; not normal for breakfast but nonetheless it tasted good. We had our first Bible study at the first of orientation, we broke into groups of 5 each with a leader from the A.S.S.(All Summer Staff, which Oleg later changed to All Summer American Personel when he realized what the abbreviation spelled. We had alot of fun with that during the week. : ) Our leader is named Calyn, she's from Florida and is really sweet. We read in Genesis 28 abt. Jacob's dream and that it took a dream like that for him to realize that God was with Him. Then we discussed times in our lives where we may have had a situation that God had to remind us He was there for us. We prayed, and then came back together to have orientation and get assigned to different teams. Kimberly, Amber and me all got put on the rec team, which is good for me because I think my singing would scare the kids, and acting makes me nervous. Calyn is also the leader of rec, which means I will be spending time getting to know her this week. After we got assigned our jobs we went with our leaders to discuss times we'd be working and what we'd be doing, and then came back together to get paired up with a translator for teaching english. My translator is named Marina, she is 20 and has a personality alot like Christa's so of course I like her. We will be spending a few hours of our time the next couple days getting to know each other and preparing our lessons. I am so nervous about english, I hope it goes okay. Even though it's only day 2 of camp, I can already see the team building relationships and working together. I think we'll all get along well. There is a youth pastor here from Tampa named JJ whose wife is a twin, and b/c of that he and I have already connected. He brought 8 peeps with him and quite a few of them have homeschooled before. Well, dinner wasn't great tonite but was edible. We have another team meeting tonite just to discuss more stuff, then we're done for the day. Monday, July 12, 2004 I decide I am going to start posting my journal entries I wrote while at camp a little bit at a time for y'all to read, starting with day one. Here goes:
I got up at 5:00 this morning because we had to be at the airport at 5:50. After abt. 13 hours of plane trips(which I did okay with being my first time to fly) plus checking bags, we got picked up at the Kiev airport at 12:00 pm their time and had a whole day ahead of us with no nap. When we got to camp we got settled in our rooms and then headed to lunch. It wasn't an extremely weird meal or anything, some hunk of meat and soup with some noodles and a cucumber on the side. After lunch we all wanted to sleep, but it was time for orientation. We met Oleg(head of camp) and his wife Lena, and played some team building games. Then Oleg told us a little abt. Radooga's history and goal. Radooga is the Ukranian word for Rainbow, and it symbolizes God's covenant of love that he made after the flood. What was really cool is after orientation we came outside and there was a rainbow. But anyway, back to Radooga's goal. Oleg says this generation of Ukranian youth, the "golden generation" he believes are easier to reach than the generations before because they are the first free generation. Because they are now free and looking for a better future, Radooga uses english teaching camps to bring them in, b/c english means better jobs for them. It's a great ministry outreach in my opinion. It's great that they are sending people over to help, especially since on the way over, the other half of the people on the plane were Jewish people going over to teach Hebrew language camps, and I'm guessing Judaism as well. It's awesome how kids come just to learn english and then leave with alot more than that. After we had our orientation, we headed to dinner. Dinner was buckwheat, it was disgusting and soupy so I didn't eat. When we were finished with dinner they showed us where the american office was, then we sang a few worship songs and headed to bed, because we were so exhausted. |
